Before social media, before smartphones, before the 24-hour news cycle... there were teen magazines.
Hi! I’m Lauren Brown West-Rosenthal, a former teen magazine editor (CosmoGIRL!, Seventeen, Teen) circa the early aughts.
In a world without influencers or TikTok feeds, celebrities had a choice: be “mysterious” or be an “open book.” As teen magazine editors, we were the powerful gatekeepers who helped them decide. We curated the “Role Model” images you saw on the newsstand, often while managing the messy reality happening behind the scenes.
The early aughts teen mag explosion was lightning in a bottle. Overnight, legendary brands gave birth to “little sisters”—Teen People, CosmoGIRL!, ElleGirl, and Teen Vogue—joining forces with icons like Seventeen, YM, and Teen Beat to define a generation.
Why Now?
The world is hungry for nostalgia. We have the TV reboots, the podcast rewatches, and the reunion tours. But we haven’t yet pulled back the curtain on the teen magazines that celebrated, covered, and created the defining moments of Y2K pop culture.
The Teen Mag Time Machine is a space to re-read, re-examine, and re-tell those stories.
We’re going back to the era of boy band rivalries, TRL marathons, and that VMA kiss that made the world clutch its pearls. Buffy, as the kids say today, “slayed,” hormones raged in Dawson’s Creek, and it was all about The OC, b**tch. Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff feuded, Brad and Jen were #couplegoals and American Pie, Bring It On and 10 Things I Hate About You created a new generation of movie stars. Beyonce was still in Destiny’s Child, Justin Guarani was a bigger “American Idol” than Kelly Clarkson and not every editor out there was convinced that a young country singer named Taylor Swift had “staying power!”
I’m opening my vault of old issues, raw interview tapes, and personal memorabilia to share the stories we never could have printed back then. I’ll re-connect with the editors, publicists, and the stars to discuss what made teen magazines so special, what the world is missing without them and tell the untold stories. And as a community, I want to hear about the impact teen mags had on your lives.
Why Me?
No, I wasn’t an editor-in-chief or president of a media company but as the entertainment editor at CosmoGIRL!. I was the one in the trenches. As an Entertainment Editor, I had the “stilettos on the ground” access. I was in the trailer, on the tour bus, and sitting across from the stars in the hotel suites where it happened.
My career has remained firmly planted in the heart of pop culture. Today, I write and produce for TV, publish personal essays, and still interview the world’s biggest stars. I feel like a proud big sister when stars I interviewed for the cover of CosmoGIRL! win Oscars (looking at you, Anne Hathaway) and I’m left with questions when others we championed take an unexpected path.
I have spent over 20 years waiting to spill these stories. There is so much to dissect, so much to compare, and so much to relive.
